Perspective Storytelling
You were in the moment. The last thing on your mind was the photographer (hopefully).
You vividly remember all of the excitement from your day! The tear forming toasts that were being given. How perfect your flowers looked. The excitement in peoples faces. That funny thing that was whispered into your ear. The fact that everyone was looking at you, at least, you felt like they were!
You think back and have wonderful memories. The more you think about them, the more you want to see your wedding photos. Sure, some people posted on social media. You've seen glimpses and they were great to see. But, so much was missed and many were dark, far away, out of focus or at a horrible angle. You really want your professional photos!
You want to relive that story. A story that helps relive those amazing wedding memories that are still so clear in your mind. You know they are going to fade eventually. You don't just want to document the things that happened. You want to relive the story!
Even something like a buttoning your dress up, a toast given or countless other wedding day moments that may not have made the top priority photo list of your photographer. They are still important. It's the details that really tell your day. They can even bring back smells and sounds as your remembered them.
When you finally get to see your amazing weddings photography, you want THAT story told. You want THOSE emotions back! Many photographers slip into, document the thing, mode and check that box. You deserve more than that.
Certain aspects of your day may get over looked, but are still important. You spent time on those decisions. For some, a lot of time. You may not even think it is a big deal yourself at this point in your life. YOU WILL! Even if you do not yet realize it, your photographer should.
What actually happened during Greg's toast? How did he look? Was it funny? Were people into it, offended, bored, embarrassed? Some photographs will even continue a previous story line or set up the next one. Who else was with him? Why does he have that look on his face? Was his shirt still untucked or his jacket back on after that crazy introduction? See what I mean? Just his face or yours listening are great but, incomplete.
You were not thinking of any of those things at the time. You didn't need to. You were there, living it! It was all clear and obvious then. Your photographer should be thinking about them though! Years from now when you are sharing that story with your future daughter. You're telling her what Uncle Greg did. Will she get it? Really get it? It's important to be able to convey the details of what really happened. How it happened, the tone and atmosphere of what happened.
It is vital for your photographer to move around your wedding in a professional, inconspicuous manner that does not distract your guests. They should photograph different angles, showing different people from different perspectives. You'll need close ups of people enjoying your day. Medium, “normal” photos captured that you are used to seeing, as you saw it. And certainly wide views that show the excitement and electricity in the room, with decorations, how full the room was, what people are doing in the room, etc.
Greg gave a toast, is a fact, not a story. You need a photographer that understands storytelling. How to express the emotional, captivating stories of your big day. You are not supposed to be thinking about it. Your job is to enjoy your day. To live in that moment, love your husband, enjoy getting to know his family and celebrating your wedding day with your friends!
A few pictures from across the room of Greg with you and your husband, sitting at a table, will document that Greg gave a toast. It will check that box. You don't want a box. You want your story!
